Like most artists - I am drawn to strong contrasts between light and shadows. When I saw this scene I only had a small sketchbook and a camera. Therefore I did some quick very value thumbnail sketches and took many photos of the scene. I knew as soon as I saw this how I pictured my painting to be, and I was very fortunate to have it evolve into what I had envisioned.
