The Sandstone Sentinel

The Sandstone Sentinel
This oil painting was created here in St. George, Utah. We have a road up the side of an escarpment entitled "Skyline Drive," where one can find the local police station. Just uphill from there is this awesome structure I've depicted. Two reliefs in the sandstone, from lifetimes of monsoons, formed this fascinating protrusion. As it sits with solitary composure just above the police station, the title rather appropriately appeared.
A recent visual fascination I've been delving into has been the influence of the sky's luminosity upon shadows that rake down from tall forms. I love the cooling, violetizing vibration effect nestled into the far end of shadows, and of course, the epic sandstone scenery all around me.
